Tintype Session FAQs

What is a tintype? How long is the exposure?

Tintypes are photos that are made using the wet collodion process. Chemistry is poured on a piece of black aluminum and exposed in the camera. Start to finish the whole process takes about 15-20 minutes for one image. I primarily shoot in natural light. Natural light exposures generally range between 3 and 20 seconds depending on a lot of factors! (Environment, weather, age of my chemistry) I will first take a test plate to ensure proper exposure, the cost of a session does not include the test plate(s) unless you want to purchase it!

Can my dog/kid be photographed?

This process requires a lot of light and long exposure times, as long as you’re ok with some movement you are more than welcome to bring your dog or child. I will do my best. If you’re looking for an exceptionally crisp photo I do offer studio portraits.

How much does a session cost?

Natural light travelling tintype sessions start at $350. That includes one 8x10 OR two 4x5s.

Each additional 4x5 is $60

Each additional 8x10 is $110

Studio portraits start at $75 for the first 4x5 and $125 for the first 8x10

What should I wear?

Tintypes are orthochromatic, which means they can’t see red but they see blue really well. Red lipstick turns black, and blue eyes REALLY lighten up. Texture is great!

What do I receive after the session?

You receive the actual, tangible 4x5 plate and a hi-res digital scan.

Where does the session take place?

Studio is located in SE Portland (Powellhurst-Gillbert) I am open to traveling within the Portland, OR area. Please reach out if you have a specific spot in mind!
